Can she meet the challenge?

Every day from now on, I’m going to try to post a photo I’ve taken. It’ll force me to post more often, so likely you’ll get not only more pictures from me, but also more words.
Here’s today’s photo. Kim mentioned it in her comments on a previous post, and it seems to be one of the most successful of my recent self-portraits.

In other news, today I heard from an old college friend I’ve been seeking out for years. I’m thrilled to hear from her. This is why the internet is a good thing. I imagine we would never have connected again without it.

Last Thursday my photo instructor took us down to the Celtics victory parade to take photos. I kind of wanted to go to the parade anyway, and as it turned out it was in fact a great photo op.

The scans aren’t quite right, but here they are.

I’m genuinely proud of this one.

Also from Portsmouth.

So… as you may know I am taking a photography class–Introduction to Black and White Photography at MassArt. I LOVE it! I think I am starting to drive Ezra crazy because I never stop talking about it. It’s an intensive three-week class, so it’s already half over (sob!), but I’m hoping to still have darkroom access for at least a week or so after the class ends, maybe longer.
I’ll have to scan some of my images to share. The detail almost definitely will not translate to the computer screen, but it will be better than nothing. We’re making 6×9 prints. I love darkroom work. I could do it all day long! I’ve learned the basic process and have done dodging, burning, flashing, etc. I’m anxious to figure out what class I can take next. It looks like the MassArt Fall schedule won’t be posted for a while. I have free admittance to various art museums, like the MFA and ICA, with my MassArt ID, so I definitely want to take advantage of that while my ID is valid.
Can you tell that I am really excited?
My instructor told me that some of my photos (perhaps my subject matter… one image of a shop window and another of an ivy-covered path–both a little surreal/nostalgic in a way) remind him of Atget–I’ll take that as high praise!… or, at least, good encouragement. This little snippet from the V&A about Atget’s work seems to apply. I wasn’t familiar with Atget before, but now I see these photos and I guess I know why my instructor thought of him.

A few things to share

So I haven’t felt very blog-worthy lately, as I suppose is apparent.
A few possibly blogworthy notes:
- My parents visited about a week ago. I was excited to see them as they don’t get up here very often. I felt a bit as though I bored them, but some of the best bits are always just sitting and chatting over a cup of tea or sharing a book. I was pretty glum when they left.
- I finally signed up for a photo class. I’m a little nervous, but it should be good. If nothing else, I won’t have to wonder anymore if I should take a solid basic photo class or not.
- Ez and I are going down to Savannah later this week to visit with Nora and Jim (and their kitties). I see Nora so rarely and I’ve never been to Savannah. I’m looking forward to hanging out and getting a bit of a summer preview with beach, berries, and bumbling around.
- I found Jeff Sher’s blog, The Animated Life, on NYT online. I’m usually pretty late to the party on these things, but in case you aren’t familiar with his work, go here to see his latest, “All the Wrong Reasons.”
Sometimes, I feel that…

I just got a huge lot of Christmas postcards on ebay! I’ve decided that I’ll share any doubles or cards that I otherwise don’t want with Kim, but I think I’m still looking at increasing my collection by probably 60% or more with this one batch of cards. I’m so excited to receive them! They’re going in the mail today, so hopefully I’ll get them by Saturday.
Based on the photos, the lot includes numerous bells and a good deal of gold and silver. That’s right up my alley!
Here are a couple of pictures from the auction page.

I finally got my two rolls of film developed. Both are full of pictures from leisure time during our January trip to France.
Some are black and white…

…and some are color.

I’ve posted more on flickr.
