This morning, before tea

I absent-mindedly emptied a packet of Equal into my glass of cranberry juice.  The kettle made an other-worldly swirling, rattling hiss.

Ezra tells me that if I post goodies anywhere on the web, I should post them here–at my own site–first.  (Or, that’s how I took what he said.)

So… I submit this 2-sided postcard that I picked up on the sidewalk last night after the show.

Ladytron Report

Last night Ezra and I saw Ladytron and the French Kicks at the Paradise.  I enjoyed the show quite a bit, though I was definitely focused on trying to get pictures this time–which was a bit of a challenge for a variety of reasons (dim and ever-changing lights and lots of equipment in my face being the biggest).

I really liked the French Kicks.  I’d only heard a few of their songs before, but I think they’ve now officially won me over.  Last night I thought they seemed like a cross between Spoon and The Postal Service, but I think I like them better than either of those bands–maybe if I listened to their records I’d decide that’s a bizarre comparison.  Anyway, they’re good stuff.  I see record shopping in my future.

The show was sold out and the crowd seemed pretty pumped for Ladytron.  Their set was about what I expected–good and dancey, though I somehow thought it would be louder and more of a wash of sound as the M83 show I saw at the Paradise was.  Still, it was good fun.

Marathon Monday

As many of you know, for the first few years that I worked for McGraw-Hill, our offices were across from the public library on Boylston Street, literally directly above the Boston Marathon finish line.  Each year during the marathon we would all take the afternoon off and hang out in the boss’s office watching the finishers come in.  I have to say, it was really very cool.  I’ll never forget seeing the photo-finish in the wheelchair race one year.  The leader was coming toward the finish line and probably thought he had the thing won, but another racer surged up behind him and overtook him in the last couple hundred yards–literally right in front of us, right before the finish line.  I’m not sure the leader realized until it was too late.  It was so exciting!  So many good stories….  This year my friend Randolph (Hi Randolph!) is running, and as far as I can tell he is making GREAT time.  Go Randolph!!

Happy Easter, friends.  I am spending the day with my honey, removing dead leaves and shiny things with barcodes from our yard.  Later we will probably throw the windows open and watch the Red Sox with cool drinks in our hands while our cats’ little noses twitch away with the breeze.

Spring greens and dancing shadows to you!

Orpheus X

I started a big post about Orpheus X, which we saw last night at Zero Arrow Theater in Cambridge.  I’m annoyed, of course, that I somehow lost the post (despite an attempt to copy and paste), so I’ll just say this:

I would have emphasized some different things.  There’s far too much mopey Orpheus and not enough character development.  Given that, I would have concentrated more on Orpheus’s journey to Hades and what happens when he gets there.  But really, I would have fleshed out the emotional and philosophical pieces more in the early going rather than just having that part drag on.  John Kelly was wonderful–believable, good voice, good physical presence… Queen of the Dead?  Yes, indeed.  Eckert did not impress me, I’m afraid.  As with seemingly every ART performance, the visuals were very good (except a few of the video bits with Eckert at the end that just seemed ridiculous to me).  I’m not generally a rock opera person (didn’t realize that’s what we were getting into when I bought the tickets), and a good bit of the music didn’t work for me, but some at the end was effective.  It was all worth it for Kelly and the staging.  Hanson was pretty good, too, as far as what she had to work with allowed her to be.
