Beloved Brattle Theatre in Peril!
OK, so those of you who also frequent Ezra’s blog will know this, but I’ll take my chances that someone else might read this… and besides, I can’t hold back!
The Brattle Theatre, one of my most loved Cambridge institutions, is in danger of closing!! It’s very distressing! The Brattle has been one of my favorite places in Cambridge since I moved to this area in 1996. Over that time, I’ve seen many good movies there. It’s a great place to see movies I love, but that I’ve never before seen on a big screen. For example, at the Brattle I’ve seen North by Northwest, Vertigo, The Shining, Evil Dead 2, The Philadelphia Story, Harold and Maude, and To Have and Have Not. I saw The Third Man and Lawrence of Arabia for the first time at the Brattle. This year I saw the documentary We Jam Econo at the Brattle. Unless I’m mistaken, this very cool film on the Minutemen didn’t play anywhere else in the area. The holiday screening of It’s A Wonderful Life has become a tradition for me and Ez. There’s nothing like seeing it in a theater. When I saw The Graduate at the Brattle not long after graduating from college myself it was like a personal revelation.
I am headed down on Wednesday with Ez to see Greta Garbo in Queen Christina. Shame on me for missing their screenings of Grand Hotel and Ninotchka last week. If you’re interested, their schedule can be found here. If you have the means (I suspect they will accept donations in any amount) or are just interested in learning more, information on their fundraising campaign is online at their website http://www.brattlefilm.org/brattlefilm/filmfoundation/legacy_campaign.html.
