Old Brown Dog

It’s about time that I sing the praises of Old Brown Dog, a very good beer brewed at one of our favorite places, the Portsmouth Brewery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Old Brown Dog is especially good right from the tap. It’s nice and clean and it’s become my regular order there. You can get it in bottles up here, too. It’s under the Smuttynose label. Incidentally, the food at the Portsmouth Brewery is pretty good, too.

Well, I finally went and got myself a digital SLR. Ez and I went to the camera shop in Davis Square yesterday, and I purchased their last Nikon D70. The new D70s models are in, but they’re considerably more expensive, and not that different. I got a pretty good deal on the D70, although for various reasons I am very unhappy to discover that I may not be able to get the $100 mail-in rebate. I shan’t discuss that further…
But the camera is exciting. It’s not so heavy as I thought it would be. Yesterday Ez and I wandered around Cambridge, and we took a bunch of pictures. Mind you, I hadn’t quite figured out how the meter works (even though it’s pretty darn simple), so the exposures are a mixed bag. But, it was a thrill to just take so many pictures, and I am liking some of them, especially considering I’d only just purchased the camera hours before I took the pix. I figured out the meter this morning. Here are a few photos from yesterday.
This one’s a little on the dark side, and it’s big, but I just like it.
I took a few more of this scene, and Ez and I agree that they look better big.
If you want to see a bunch more, you can see all my photos posted on flickr (taken on my new camera, on Ezra’s camera, and on my film SLR). Hopefully my pictures will improve as I learn more about using the camera.

I am torn up over the thought that the Sox might trade Bill Mueller. Say it isn’t so! He’s one of my favorites. Sadness!
I ran lots of errands this morning, tucked around working at Toscanini’s, which was pleasant and productive. After going to the bank and the post office, I worked through my breakfast and then filled up the gas tank, purchased some mexican heather to hang on the porch, picked up some goodies at TJ Maxx, and purchased a handful of food supplements (including a gigantic package of fresh basil) at Whole Foods.
Ez needs an alarm clock to tell him when to come home. He “loses track of time.” No more coming home at 8:00. Please!
In the department of good deals: Yesterday I purchased 3 packages of 100 paperclips and one 24 pack of no. 2 pencils at the combined total bargain price (including tax) of $1.14. Bless back-to-school.

Apparently, I am pretty good at finding things. This has been a theme in my life for a while. I am always proud to tell of how I once found a green house key in the middle of a vast green lawn when I was probably no more than eight years old. Whenever Ezra loses things, there’s a 90% chance that I’ll find them (unless he lost something on the T or some such).
Lately, I have discovered that I am pretty good at finding things on the web, too. OK, web search skills are nothing special, maybe, but I recently won a little contest with the help of said skills, and I’ve been asked to help out with a little research project, partly because of those skills (in my estimation). It’s all silliness related to my Interpol obsession. (Well, I’m better off just calling it that, no?) But I can apply my skills to other topics as well… (in case you are a skeptic–) like the other day when around 5:00 Ez sent me a picture of someone from our past and challenged me to identify him. With the help of my “mad google skillz” (to quote a friend), I gathered the necessary clues to correctly identify the person in the photo before Ezra got home.
Anyway, enough with the horn blowing.
A week later…

I’m so slow these days with the blog.
So last Monday Ez and I went to see our friend Doug’s band The Hyphens at the Middle East. A fine time was had by all. We took silly pictures, and since we were just fooling around, I guess that makes them “punk rock.” A sampling:
RRRAWWK!
So… we’re having our house painted, and it’s all bang-bang-banging and scrape-scrape-scraping all the livelong day. I’m sure it will be good in the end. Really, it could be worse. But it’s nice to have uninterupted summer weekends at home. Aw well…
Other than that, it’s been work…
Oh… and I guess I’m so behind that I never mentioned the swell visit from our Pennsylvania-Ezra-cousin-pals, Margaret and Shannon, and Margaret’s boy-companion-guy, Niall. (BCG… try it on, Niall, see what you think.) That was good fun. We saw another Sox game, which we won handily (yay!), unlike last night (boo!). We also spent what I thought was a really fun day in Portsmouth.
Evidence here:

Niall and Margaret in matching Red Sox garb examine the day’s purchases on the Esplanade

Shannon and Margaret with more purchases in sunny Prescott Park
Speaking of Portsmouth, they’ve torn down this old theater building that recently had a camera shop in it for some kind of silly condo-type development in the middle of town. Grrr…
Need to do some grocery shopping today, I think. Gonna get outta the house, yo.
