Interpol again

I’m afraid you’ll all have to indulge me in another Interpol post. Read on…

Last night Ez and I went to see Interpol at the Orpheum in Boston. Our seats were so much better than the seats we had at Radio City, partly because the Orpheum is just a lot smaller. We were 6 or 7 rows back on the left, but the Orpheum is so narrow at the front that we had a great view. The seats are jammed together, so we were probably only 15 feet from the center of the stage. The setlist was the same as the one they played the first night in New York, but it was so much more energetic. What a difference the crowd makes. We were on our feet and cheering pretty much the whole time in Boston. I did hear a handful of mistakes from the guys, but it didn’t matter much. They were minor. Paul sort of blew us a kiss in the middle of Stella (??), and at the very end, Daniel and Paul put their arms around each other’s waists and walked slowly offstage. It was cute/funny and made me think of the end of Casablanca… “this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship…”

Afterwards, Ezra turned on the super-husband when he indulged my desire to go to the afterparty at Middlesex. It was a little weird when we first got there. Carlos D wasn’t there yet and even though it was kind of cool, it wasn’t what we were in the mood for. After a drink or two, and once Carlos D did arrive, things improved. He played fun, sometimes silly, mostly 80s dance music–stuff like The Cure, Xymox, and Iggy Pop. He’s a not-so-closeted metal head, so we got some Metallica as well.

Pretty early in the evening, I spotted a woman, Gail, I recognized from an online Interpol community where I get a lot of info. I introduced myself and I’m glad I did. She’s a little crazy–she’s been following the band for much of their tour and she’s very forward–but she’s really nice. We hung out a bit, and she ended up giving me one of Sam’s drumsticks, among other things. She also introduced me to Daniel and Paul, and I think seeing her in action is what gave me the nerve to speak to Carlos myself.

Daniel was easily the most approachable and nicest of the three. I’m sure Paul can be fantastic, and probably Carlos, too, but last night Daniel was the sweetest. He really looked at me when I was talking to him, and seemed to be listening to the drivel spilling from my lips (being shy and having a few drinks is a funny combination). He asked me my name and made a point of saying goodbye to me and shaking my hand at the end of the night. Gail, being the forward type, asked him if I could take a picture with him, and of course he is the nicest so he obliged. I’ll have to post it if it’s not too scary! Maybe later today.

I felt a little weird meeting Paul, because he seemed antsy to get going, but I also figured, I might not get this chance again. He was very nice, shook my hand, and said he was pretty sure we’d met before (??)… He must say that to all the girls.

It was a late night, so I must say thank you here to Ez. They’ll be out of the country soon (ha!), so you won’t have to worry too much about mid-week late nights for a while, at least. (wink wink)

Re: closet metalhead: don’t forget Motorhead. The ACE OF SPADES! THE ACE OF SPADES!

While I obviously would never have gone to the festivities without you (nor would I have known about them), it was kind of a kick. I mean, you know in your head that they’re regular people, but it’s always fun to see people in bands, especially bands that play big venues, hanging out at clubs like regular people. Like when we found ourselves standing next to Mary Hansen of Stereolab at their opening act.

The chic, ethnically diverse hipster clientele of the Middlesex when we first got there definitely made me feel like I was in a casting call for a Heineken ad.

Gail seems like sort of a full-time fan; not just of Interpol, but of U2 and other bands. She follows them around, takes tons of pictures of them, etc. And the way she was talking about them with her friend after the after party then made me feel a little bit like I was listening to an episode of This American Life. She was *extremely* nice though, and a strong personality, and you would not have met the band without her. If we would have hung around longer, I think she would have continued to give you the contents of her purse, item by item, every few minutes.

Yes… of course, Motorhead! How could I forget? He was cracking us up with his air guitar and air drums.
